Low literacy levels among adults who did not have an opportunity to get to school can affect economic development, diminish the effectiveness of citizen economic participation and lead to a repeated cycle of poverty.

Helping adults gain literacy skills helps reduce poverty, improve public health, and advance human rights around the world. To make efforts even stronger, we increase the capacity and quality of adult literacy programs through technical assistance, professional development, training, and content development. It also introduces the risk of a repeated cycle of poverty.
